Sail Szczecin 2026: Loth Loriën

The sailing vessel was built in 1907 at the Norwegian Mjellem & Karlsen shipyard in Bergen. Originally named Njord, she served as a steam-powered herring lugger operating in the North Sea. Over the decades, she underwent numerous modernisations – in 1930 she was lengthened, and in 1952 her steam engine was replaced with a diesel engine.

A new chapter in her history began in 1989, when she was purchased by Dutch shipowner Jaap van der Rest. The vessel underwent a complete transformation into a luxurious passenger sailing ship. The name Loth Loriën comes from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and refers to an Elvish realm (literally “Flowering Dream”).

Today, the ship sails as a three-masted brigantine, taking part in the most important tall ship gatherings and maritime events across Europe.
