Bismarck Tower

More information

The tower was built in honor of the German Iron Chancellor Otto von Bismarck. After his death, a foundation was established that built over 240 such towers around the world. They were built with public contributions. Unfortunately, few have survived. Our Szczecin tower is the most expensive (200,000 marks), the largest, and the best-preserved.

The concept for its construction emerged as early as 1899. Wilhelm Kreis’s design, modeled on the Mausoleum of Theodoric in Ravenna and the tomb of Cecilia Metella, was selected. Construction began in 1913 and was completed on August 10, 1921.

The tower was located on a hill that was initially undeveloped. Today, the entire hill is covered in forest.

On the slopes of Green Hill stood  the Weinberg restaurant . It was famous for its wine made from the fruit grown on the surrounding slopes. The place was a very attractive place for locals.
